Tengeru Village Development Centre Updates.
January 2021
School is back! After the winter break, the kids went back to class on January 13! We currently have 77 students enrolled for this term.
This week we had a meeting with the parents to discuss safety - including picking up the students on time and ensuring that they wear helmets on pikipikis (motorcycle taxis) for safety!
We are looking for additional sponsors for 22 of the students - if you are interested, or know someone who would be interested in sponsoring a student, please reach out!
September 2020
Due to covid-19 our charitable status has been pushed back a little longer than we would of liked. With that being said ,we are continuing to work extremely hard to gain this status so we are able to provide our sponsors and donors with tax receipts.
At this point we are still a registered not-for-profit charity organization and have submitted our documents for approval of charitable status. With government employees in Ontario returning back to the office, we hope to hear from them soon to get the ball rolling.
August 2020
Volunteers were able to make a bigger vegetable garden for the children to have more fresh food options and reduce our food costs!
July 27, 2020
Back to school! The school is finally back and open and the kids are slowly getting back into routine after 4 months off due to COVID-19! This term, we have 5 classes running instead of our usual 4 to accommodate everyone and to try and have fewer students in each class. We also have two new hand-washing stations to ensure the kiddos have clean hands and reduce the spread of cold & flu viruses!
Additional COVID-19 measures have been put in place at school in hopes to maintain a safe environment for everyone including:
- Adding two new hand washing stations
- Each child now has their own water-bottle - labelled with their name on it that stays at the school and is washed each morning
- More classrooms - in order to have less students per classroom
- New drinking water filters
June 2020
Due to the worldwide lockdown Tengeru Village School has been closed for the past few months. As most of our students receive most of their meals strictly through the means of our school, we have done our best to continue with sending out packages to each and every one of the students/families so they can remain fed during this very difficult time. Thank you to all our wonderful sponsors for continuing with your sponsorships to allow us to continue to do this!
Unfortunately the school was broken into in mid June. There was some damage done both inside and outside the school, as well as some stolen property. In hopes to prevent this from ever happening again, the parents have chosen to hire an overnight guard to monitor the school. They have seen the importance behind this and have all agreed to help cover the cost of the guard. We have also implemented a night-time light, using hydro run from the landlord next door. This will ensure the night guard feels more comfortable and that he can see the school premises in the dark. It is a very common thing in Tanzania to have a night time guard in order to prevent break-ins. We were also able to invest in new padlocks for the school doors and have the wall around the school built up higher.
September 2019
We raised $200 at our Movie Night at Circle Theatre in Alliston, ON. Thank you for your support!
August 2019
The Bahati Project started the process of becoming a registered Canadian Charity! More to come on progress! :)
May 2018
Everything at Tengeru is going well! Students are on their 1 month summer holiday and we had a little party before they left. Rent was paid until the end of the year, and the tire swings at the school are being fixed. All is going well at the school and our manager just sent us new photos!
Our cleaning lady Mama Paulina, needed a new place to live and so we found her a place and are currently paying for it. She was attacked in the middle of the night so for her safety we moved her to a place where her and her daughter would be safe.

December 2017
We have continued to support the school in everything that they need, and as always had a little holiday party for staff, students and families. A delicious meal with meat, fruit, juice and soda.
July 2017
Throughout the year we have continued to support the school and ensure rent, teacher wages, food, etc. were taken care of. In July, Anne-Marie revisited the school to ensure everything was running up to date. While there, she ensured all of the student records were in order, and that all teacher records were also in order. Teachers went through training on new systems, and got pay rises. She brought vitamins for the next 6 months, medical supplies, school supplies, sports equipment and other general equipment. New kitchen supplies, plates, cups, pots, and cutlery were all purchased for the school. A new rental agreement was made and rent was paid for the next year. The kitchen needed a little adjustment and the garden needed tending to but all in all a good trip and lots accomplished.
Side note: They even use the spinach from the garden to prepare meals!

Beginning of 2017
Volunteers put in a vegetable garden, painted the school and built part of a new kitchen. We are so grateful for them. The Bahati Project continued to support the school financially.
2016 Year
Throughout the year we have taken care of the school rent, teacher wages, playground updates, food, basic supplies, multi vitamins, etc. We had amazing support from our sponsors and friends and families.
At Christmas we had another Christmas party. We had a DJ and a dance with all of the families of students. We had a Sponsor a Family event, and every family received a Christmas bag of goodies including sugar, salt, flour, matches, coffee, tea, soap, toothbrushes, etc. The families were so excited and grateful and we couldn't have been more thrilled.
December, 2015
The school is currently being re-registered as a NGO in Tanzania so that our new Board of Directors have rights to the school and that we can take action when we would like. We also held a Christmas party for our students and parents with delicious food and drinks.
August, 2015
Anne-Marie took on the new role as International Director for Tengeru Village School and now all funds are being taken care of solely by The Bahati Project. This means that the rent of the school, food supplies, teacher wages, health checks, vitamins and dental program is all be funded by The Bahati Project. We are SO excited about this new adventure.
July, 2015
Anne-Marie, her mom Sue, and friend Alex traveled to Tanzania this July to make sure that the projects were running smoothly. Tengeru had some kinks to iron out, but we are currently working on them. We are so excited to share with you (soon!) the new role the Bahati Project is playing at Tengeru Village. While at Tengeru, we donated approximately $300 dollars to their food program to ensure the children were being fed everyday. We also bought vitamins, and brought over about 100 toothbrushes as well as PLENTY of craft supplies and sports equipment. During our visit we were also able to take Baby Class to get checkups at the hospital... and all were good to go! A very successful month at Tengeru :)

Pippi House Foundation for Girls
July, 2017
We were able to go to Pippi House to support one of the girls in her sewing business. We bought $100 of supplies for her, which allowed her to pay for her living costs for 6 months.
July, 2015
On our trip to Tanzania, we were able to donate approximately $250 for water and electricity bills. We also brought purses for each of the girls with toothbrushes, toothpaste, and nail polish for each girl. They were so thrilled :) It was so nice to see some of the girls we hadn't seen in a while and meet some of the new babies!
May 21st, 2015
We have recently sent another 600 dollars to Pippi House Foundation for Girls! We will post shortly what this money went to. Unfortunately Pippi House is having a hard time with their budget right now and could use all the help they can get! Let us know if you have any ideas to help the girls!
January 2nd, 2015
We have raised $1200 dollars to donate to Pippi House Foundation for Girls! Quite a bit of this money will be going to pay off the school fees for all of the girls for the upcoming semester! We also want to donate the money to ensure the girls are eating nutritious meals and drinking clean water!

Newlands Orphanage
July, 2017
On our trip to Newlands this July, we brought another load of groceries and lots of treats. We had such a good day hanging out with the kids and snuggling them! We purchased another 150 kg of food including beans, rice, potatoes, cucumbers, bananas, tomatoes, watermelon, cooking oil, bread, peanut butter, jam, etc. We were also able to bring each child a pencil case filled with small items such as toothpaste, soap, toothbrushes, stickers, etc. and each child picked out an extra toy. The students were so thrilled to have their own brand new items. As always, when we go we like to celebrate with a little party! The kids hadn't had pop, chips and cookies in about a year so it was a VERY exciting day!

On our trip to Newlands this July, we brought SO MUCH STUFF!!! It was such an amazing day. We purchased over 150 kg of food including beans, rice, potatoes, cucumbers, bananas, tomatoes, watermelon, cooking oil, bread, peanut butter, jam and more which helped to feed the orphanage for about a month. We were also able to bring each child a pillow case case, pair of shoes, bar of soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, and a few small toys (nail polish, balloons, stickers, play-doh, etc.). It was so incredible being able to give each child their own bag of goodies...they were so thrilled to have something to themselves. While visiting, we also decided to throw a small party. The children hadn't had pop in about a year and they were so thrilled to get pop, cookies, chips and lollipops. The children here are one large happy family. It is so amazing to see them care for one another and share everything they have. Such an incredible day!!!!!
